Hanger Sharing: How to Fit a Big Wardrobe in a Small Closet
Huge wardrobe + small closet = a crowded, messy space. When tops are crammed together, you can't see what you own, so you end up wearing the same few favorites ("fit" repetition) and buying things you already have.
Hanger sharing is one of Shannon's favorite fixes. It frees up rod space, makes every top easy to find, and gives every item a home.

What Is Hanger Sharing?
Hanger sharing means folding several similar tops over the bar of one sturdy hanger, instead of giving every shirt its own hanger. Group them by style and color, and one hanger holds all your options for something like "red short-sleeve tee."

What You Need?
Strong hangers, definitely required. Weak hangers need not apply! Wooden hangers with a bar across the bottom work best because they hold the weight without bending.

How to Hanger Share Your Closet, Step by Step
Strong hangers, definitely required. Weak hangers need not apply! Wooden hangers with a bar across the bottom work best because they hold the weight without bending.
1.
Pull everything out. Take down all your tops so you can see what you have. It's the perfect time to pull anything you no longer wear for donation.
2.
Sort by style. Group short sleeves, long sleeves, tanks and so on.
3.
Sort each style by color. Use that ROYGBIV we all learned: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, then neutrals like gray and black.
4.
Fold tops over the hanger bar. Fold each top in half lengthwise and drape it over the bar, about 2 to 5 tops per hanger depending on the fabric.
5.
Hang in rainbow order. Line the hangers up on the rod in color order so the whole closet reads at a glance.
Why Hanger Sharing Works
Huge wardrobe + small closet = a crowded, messy space. When tops are crammed together, you can't see what you own, so you end up wearing the same few favorites ("fit" repetition) and buying things you already have.
Hanger sharing is one of Shannon's favorite fixes. It frees up rod space, makes every top easy to find, and gives every item a home.
- Find anything fast. Looking for a red short-sleeve top? One hanger supplies all of your options.
- See what you already own. No more buying a third gray tee because the first two were buried.
- More rod space. Fewer hangers means more room in a small closet.
- It stays organized. Every item has a dedicated hanger, so putting laundry away is easy.

How many shirts can go on one hanger?
Usually 2 to 5, depending on how thick the tops are and how sturdy the hanger is. If the hanger tilts or bends, take one off.

What clothes work best for hanger sharing?
Soft knits like T-shirts, tanks and casual tops. Give crisp button-downs, dresses and anything that wrinkles easily their own hanger.

Does this work for kids' closets?
Yes. Color-sorted hangers make it easier for kids to find outfits and put clothes away themselves.
